How to Remove Vocals From a Song: Free Tools, Audacity and AI Compared (2026)
How to remove vocals from a song comes down to two approaches: the old phase-cancellation trick, which is free and instant but takes the kick and bass with it, and AI stem separation, which pulls the vocal out and leaves the rest of the mix standing. This guide covers both, the free tools, the splitters built into your DAW, and what each one gets wrong, for a karaoke track, a backing track or an instrumental to remix.
Short answer: for a clean instrumental, use an AI stem splitter and mute the vocal stem. Free options are vocalremover.org in the browser and Ultimate Vocal Remover on your computer. The phase trick in Audacity is fine for a rough karaoke track, not for anything you will build on.
For your own sessions and practice. Clear a sample before you release it, like any other.
Two ways to remove vocals, and why they sound different
Phase cancellation. In most mixes the lead vocal sits dead centre, equally loud in the left and right channels. Flip the polarity of one channel and sum the two to mono, and everything in the centre cancels. The vocal drops out. So does anything else mixed to the centre, usually the kick, the snare and the bass, and the vocal's stereo reverb stays behind as a ghost. The result is hollow. It takes a second and costs nothing.
AI stem separation. A trained model listens to the mixed song and estimates each part: vocals, drums, bass and everything else. Take away the vocal stem and the instrumental keeps its kick, bass and width. The separation is an estimate, so listen for a watery sound on cymbals, a faint snare left in the vocal, or breaths and vocal reverb that end up in the "other" stem. Dense mixes and heavily processed vocals are the hardest cases.
If you want the opposite, the vocal on its own, that is the acapella problem: how to get an acapella from any song covers it.
Method 1: Audacity (free, phase trick)
Audacity has the phase method built in. Open the song, select the whole track, and go to Effect, then Vocal Reduction and Isolation. Choose Remove Vocals and apply. Audacity does the polarity flip and sum for you, and the settings let you narrow the band it cancels so the kick and bass survive a little better. Export the result.
It is quick, free and works offline on Mac, Windows and Linux. The limit is the method itself: anything centred in the vocal's frequency range goes too, and a song with a wide or doubled vocal barely changes. Good for a rough karaoke track. Not good for a stem you will mix with.
Method 2: Online vocal removers (free tier, AI)
Sites such as vocalremover.org split a song in the browser: upload, wait, download the instrumental and the vocal. The free tiers are genuinely useful for a one-off. The catches are the usual ones: a file length limit, a queue at busy times, a paid tier for batches or higher quality, and the fact that you are uploading someone's music to someone else's server. Check the current limits on each site, since they change.
Method 3: Your DAW
Several DAWs now split stems without extra software. Logic Pro has a Stem Splitter, FL Studio has stem separation, and recent versions of Ableton Live include it too. Check which version and which computer you need, since the feature is new and varies by release. Once the stems are on separate tracks, mute the vocal and you have the instrumental, already at your project's tempo.
Method 4: Ultimate Vocal Remover and Demucs (free, best quality)
Ultimate Vocal Remover (UVR) is a free app for Mac and Windows that runs several separation models on your own computer, including the ones many paid sites use. Demucs is the open-source model behind a lot of them. Quality is as good as free gets, and nothing leaves your computer. The cost is setup: a large download, a model to choose, and a wait while your computer works, longer on an older machine. If you remove vocals often and want the best free result, this is the route.
Method 5: Premix (in your DAW, with the song's key and BPM)
Premix is our own plugin, so take this with the usual grain of salt. It is a VST3/AU plugin plus an app for Mac and Windows: type a song or import a file, and it reads the key and BPM, saves a 24-bit WAV and a 320 kbps MP3, and splits four stems, vocals, drums, bass and other. In Ableton Live 12 the stems land on colour-coded tracks at bar 1, lined up with the song; in any other DAW you drag them in. Mute the vocal track and the instrumental is there, on the grid, in key. On an Apple Silicon Mac with macOS 14 or newer the split runs locally and is free after a one-time engine install; on Windows and Intel Macs it splits through LALAL.ai. $39 one-time, 14-day money-back guarantee. If you only want a karaoke file and nothing else, one of the free options above is simpler.

Which one to use
| You want | Use | Cost | Where it runs |
|---|---|---|---|
| A rough karaoke track in a minute | Audacity, Vocal Reduction and Isolation | Free | Your computer |
| A clean instrumental, one song, no install | An online vocal remover | Free tier, paid for more | Their server |
| Stems inside the DAW you already use | Logic, FL Studio or Live's built-in splitter | Included | Your computer |
| The best free result, any number of songs | Ultimate Vocal Remover or Demucs | Free | Your computer |
| The instrumental on the grid, with key and BPM, to remix | Premix | $39 once | Your computer (Mac), LALAL.ai (Windows, Intel Mac) |
Getting a cleaner result
- Start from the best file you have. A lossless file separates better than a low-bitrate stream.
- Listen in solo. Solo the instrumental and listen for vocal ghosts in the reverb and for softened drum transients. Then play it against the original to check the low end is still there.
- Keep the "other" stem. Backing vocals, doubles and vocal effects often end up in it. If you want every trace of voice gone, you may need to EQ or edit that stem too.
FAQ
Can you completely remove vocals from a song? Rarely. AI separation gets close on a clean, modern mix and leaves artifacts on a dense or heavily effected one. The phase trick never removes the vocal's reverb.
What is the best free way to remove vocals? For quality, Ultimate Vocal Remover on your own computer. For speed with no install, a free online vocal remover.
Why does my instrumental sound hollow and thin? You used phase cancellation. It removed the centred kick and bass along with the vocal. Use a stem splitter instead.
Can I remove vocals in Audacity without a plugin? Yes. Effect, then Vocal Reduction and Isolation, is built in. It uses the phase method, with all its limits.
Is it legal? An instrumental for your own practice or a private session is one thing; releasing or selling something built on someone else's recording needs permission from the rights holders.
