How to Match the Tempo and Key of Any Song to Your Project
A song sounds wrong next to your beat for two reasons: it runs at a different tempo, or it sits in a different key. Fix both and it locks in. This guide shows how, with the idea first and then the steps in the three DAWs people ask about most.
The idea
- Tempo: your project has a BPM. The song has its own. You either change the song to match your project (time-stretch it) or change your project to match the song.
- Key: your parts are in one key and the song is in another. You either transpose the song by some number of semitones, or write your parts in the song''s key.
Stretching and transposing both change the audio, and bigger changes sound worse. As a rule, a shift of a few semitones or a few BPM is safe; large moves start to colour the sound, especially on vocals.
Step 1: find the song''s BPM and key
You need the numbers first. Our guides cover this: how to find the BPM of a song and how to find the key of a song. Remember two traps: half-time and double-time (70 and 140 can both be right), and relative major and minor (A minor and C major share notes).
Step 2: work out the semitone shift
Say the song is in A minor and your beat is in C minor. Count up the notes from A to C: A to A sharp is 1, to B is 2, to C is 3. Shifting up 3 semitones moves the song to C minor. You can also go down 9, and you should pick the smaller move. Between -6 and +6 semitones is the range to aim for.
The Camelot wheel gives you a shortcut: keys next to each other on the wheel mix well, so you may not need to shift at all.
Step 3: do it in your DAW
Ableton Live
- Drag the audio into an audio track and enable Warp.
- Set the warp mode. Complex Pro suits full songs, vocals and bass. Beats suits drums.
- To match tempo, either set the project tempo to the song''s BPM, or set the clip''s warp so it follows your project tempo.
- To match key, use the clip''s Transpose control, in semitones.
Logic Pro
- Drag the audio in and enable Flex Time on the track. Choose a Flex mode that suits the material.
- Use Smart Tempo to follow your project, or set the project tempo to the song''s.
- For key, use the Pitch control of the Flex Pitch or the region transpose, in semitones.
FL Studio
- Load the sample in a Channel or the Playlist and set its time-stretch mode.
- Match the project tempo to the song''s, or stretch the sample to your tempo.
- Use the Pitch knob or the pitch shifter in semitones for key.
Menu names change between versions, so check your DAW''s manual if something is not where described.
When it sounds off
- Warbly vocals. Try another warp mode, or a smaller shift.
- Drums go soft. Do not transpose drums. Warp them with a mode that keeps transients and leave the pitch alone.
- Still clashing after the shift. Check the relative minor or major. If you picked the wrong one, you are 3 semitones off.
Skip the arithmetic
Premix does this part for you. You type a song, it reads the key and BPM, and in Ableton Live 12 it can either set your project to the song or warp the song to fit your project: it matches the tempo and moves the song into your key, using Complex Pro for vocals and bass and Beats for the drums, which it never transposes. In other DAWs you drag the song to bar 1 at your tempo. It also splits stems. It is $39 one-time, for Mac and Windows, with a 14-day money-back guarantee, and made for your own sessions and practice.
