    How to Do Reverse Delay in Ableton Live

    Ableton doesn't have a "reverse delay" button, but between the Reverse clip command and a tempo-synced delay, you've got everything you need to build it by hand. It's the same core chain as reverse reverb, with one extra wrinkle: the echoes need to land on the beat.

    Method 1: The Manual Way (Reverse + Delay)

    Step 1 — Isolate the sound. Put the hit or phrase you want echoes to build into on its own track, committed as clean audio (Freeze + Flatten if it was warped).

    Step 2 — Reverse the clip. Right-click and choose Reverse.

    Step 3 — Add a tempo-synced delay. Drop Ableton's stock Delay (or Echo) on the track and set the delay time to a musical division — 1/8, 1/4, dotted-1/8 — so the echoes land on the grid once you flip everything back.

    Step 4 — Bounce it. Freeze, then Flatten.

    Step 5 — Reverse again. Right-click the bounced clip and Reverse one more time. Because the delay was tempo-synced before this flip, the taps should land on the beat, stacking up into your original hit.

    Step 6 — Nudge and trim. Check each tap against the grid — this is the fiddly part, since small timing drift from the delay setting compounds across every repeat.

    Common Mistakes

    • Delay time not tempo-synced — a free-running delay time means the echoes won't land on the beat after the second reverse, and there's no fixing that after the fact.
    • Too much feedback — a long feedback tail buries the transient it's building into. Keep repeats countable.
    • Skipping the Freeze/Flatten step — reversing a clip with live devices still on it won't capture the processed delay tail.
    • Not checking each tap individually — unlike a reverb wash, every echo here is audible on its own; zoom in and check timing tap by tap.

    Method 2: A Real-Time Insert (Slingshot)

    The manual chain is free but has to be rebuilt every time the part, tempo, or hit position changes. Slingshot generates the stacked reverse-delay taps live as a single insert — tempo-synced automatically, with six delay characters and independent pitch/formant control on the echoes, so a tempo change or a moved hit doesn't mean starting over.

    Which Method Should You Use?

    Use the manual method if: you're doing this once, you want a specific delay you already own, or you don't mind the precision work. Use a real-time plugin if: the part or tempo is still moving, you're doing this across many hits, or you want the taps editable live instead of committed at bounce time.
