Ableton Missing Files? How to Find and Relink Them

Missing Files Almost Always Means "Moved," Not "Gone"

A red "missing file" warning in Ableton is alarming, but the underlying cause is rarely a deleted sample — it's almost always a file that moved, a drive that's not connected, or a cloud sync feature interfering with the project folder.

The Fast Fix: Locate and Replace

Ableton's built-in Locate/Replace flow lets you point Live at a file's new location and it'll relink automatically. Open the missing file's dialog from the warning, or from the Live Set's file list, and manually locate where the sample actually lives now.

The Permanent Fix: Collect All and Save

If you're going to keep working on this project — or send it to someone else — go to File > Collect All and Save. This copies every media file the Set uses into the project's own folder, so it's no longer depending on files scattered across your drive. Do this before you send a project to a collaborator, not after they report missing files.

The 8 Most Common Causes

Work through these if Locate/Replace and Collect All and Save don't fully resolve it:

1. Permission issues — grant disk access in System Preferences (Mac) or enable full read/write permissions (Windows).
2. Files moved or deleted — use Live's file manager to relocate them, and check your Trash/Recycle Bin in case it was accidental.
3. Cloud backup conflicts — iCloud's "Optimized Storage" or OneDrive's "Files on Demand" can silently offload local copies of your samples. Set your project folder to "Always keep on device."
4. Disconnected external drives — reconnect and power on the drive the samples live on.
5. Files living outside the project folder — run Collect All and Save to bring everything in.
6. Multiple Sets sharing one project — use "Save Live Set As…" to split them into separate project folders, then Collect All and Save each one individually.
7. Hidden Take Lanes — clips can be hiding in a collapsed Take Lane. Show them with Shift+Option+T (Mac) or Shift+Alt+T (Windows).
8. A deleted "Ableton Project Info" folder — if this hidden folder got removed from inside your project directory, Live can lose track of relative file paths. Recreating the folder structure can resolve it.

Sharing Projects the Right Way

If you're regularly sending sessions to collaborators, mixing/mastering engineers, or just moving between your own machines: always Collect All and Save before the handoff, and zip the entire project folder rather than pulling individual files out of it. Nine times out of ten, "missing files" reports from a collaborator trace back to a project that was shared without this step.
