Ableton Tracks Not Lining Up? Fix This Timing Issue
Why Recordings Drift Off the Grid
Tracks that don't line up after recording are almost always a timing/latency issue, not a performance issue — meaning the fix is in your settings, not your playing.
1. Check Your Monitor Setting
The timing of a recording depends heavily on which Monitor setting is active on the track: In, Auto, or Off. With Monitor set to Auto or In, Live delays the recording by your system's overall latency value — which may not match how the audio was actually performed in real time. For acoustic instruments or vocals monitored through your audio interface directly, set Monitor to Off where possible.
2. Make Sure Delay Compensation Is Enabled
When Delay Compensation is switched off, each track plays back as soon as its own processing finishes — which means tracks with different plugin loads finish processing at different times and drift out of sync with each other. Keep Delay Compensation on during recording, arranging, and exporting.
3. Use "Keep Latency" (Live 12)
Live 12 added a Keep Latency toggle. With it off, Live won't print your monitoring latency into the actual recording, while you can still monitor through Live normally. If your recordings are consistently landing a fraction late, check this setting.
4. Watch Reduced Latency When Monitoring
If you have Reduced Latency When Monitoring active during recording, be aware it bypasses Delay Compensation only for the tracks you're actively monitoring — which can misalign those specific recordings relative to everything else in the session.
5. Minimize Processing While Recording
Heavy plugins add their own processing latency. Where possible, use only zero-latency effects during the actual recording pass, and add anything latency-heavy afterward.
6. Fixing It After the Fact
If a recording is already misaligned, you don't have to redo it — nudge it manually into place on the arrangement grid, or adjust its warp markers if it's an audio clip, to pull it back into time with everything else.
