    What Is Reverse Delay? How Reversed Echoes Build Into a Sound

    What Is Reverse Delay?

    Reverse delay is the rhythmic cousin of reverse reverb: instead of one continuous wash of ambience swelling into a sound, you get discrete, repeating echoes that build up toward the hit — a stack of reversed taps instead of a smooth rise.

    Reverse Delay vs. Reverse Reverb

    Both effects solve the same problem — building anticipation before a transient lands — but they sound completely different because of how the underlying effect works. Reverse reverb is continuous ambience: one wash that blooms and grows into the hit. Reverse delay is discrete and rhythmic: individual echoes ("taps") that repeat and stack, each one audible on its own, building in intensity as they approach the transient — more "tap-tap-tap-tap-HIT" than a wall of sound.

    Producers often layer both: a reverse-reverb wash underneath a reverse-delay's rhythmic taps, so the buildup has both texture and pulse.

    The Manual Way to Make Reverse Delay

    The technique mirrors reverse reverb's manual process, but delay adds an extra wrinkle: because the echoes are discrete and rhythmic, they need to land on the beat once you flip everything back around — which makes the manual method meaningfully harder to get right.

    1. Reverse the dry audio you want to build echoes into.
    2. Apply a tempo-synced delay to the reversed audio — set the delay time to a musical division (1/8, 1/4, dotted-1/8, etc.) so the echoes will line up with the grid.
    3. Bounce the wet, reversed signal.
    4. Reverse it again, flipping the echoes back to forward playback. If your delay time was tempo-synced correctly, the taps should now land on the beat, building into your transient instead of decaying after it.
    5. Nudge and trim until the final tap lines up exactly where the original hit needs to land — this is the fiddly part, since any timing error from steps 2-4 compounds here.

    Because the echoes are individually audible, small timing mistakes are much more noticeable than they are with a continuous reverb wash. That precision requirement is exactly why the manual method is harder here than it is for reverse reverb.
