What Is Reverse Reverb? The Complete Guide to the Pre-Hit Swell
If you've ever heard a vocal or a drum hit that seems to swell UP out of nowhere right before it lands — a rising wash of sound that builds into the transient instead of trailing away after it — that's reverse reverb. It's one of the most recognizable effects in modern production, and also one of the most misunderstood, because most people have only ever heard the sound, not the two very different ways it gets made.
What Reverse Reverb Actually Is
Normal reverb tails off. You hit a snare, the reverb blooms and decays after the hit, getting quieter until it disappears. Reverse reverb flips that relationship: the wash builds and gets louder as it approaches the hit, then cuts out (or blends) exactly as the transient lands. Instead of hearing space after a sound, you hear anticipation before it.
The effect is a rise, not a decay — which is exactly why it works so well for anything that needs to feel like it's arriving.

Reverse reverb has been part of the production toolkit since tape studios in the '60s and '70s, and it shows up everywhere once you know what you're listening for:

How Reverse Reverb Is Traditionally Made
Before real-time plugins existed, reverse reverb was a manual, multi-step process — and a lot of producers still do it exactly this way:
- Reverse the dry audio. Take the sound you want to swell (a vocal, a snare, a chord) and flip it backwards.
- Apply reverb to the reversed audio. Now the reverb tail — which normally trails after the sound — is trailing after the reversed sound.
- Bounce/render the wet, reversed signal.
- Reverse it again. Flipping the bounced audio back to its original direction puts that reverb tail in front of the original transient instead of behind it. The tail is now a swell that leads into the hit.
- Line it up. Drag the reversed-and-reversed-again file so the transient lands exactly where you want it, then trim.
It works, and it's genuinely the only way to do it with stock tools — but every step compounds. Change one note in a vocal take and you're redoing all five steps. Want the swell length to breathe with the arrangement instead of staying static? You're re-bouncing every time. It's a technique that rewards patience more than experimentation.
Reverse Reverb vs. Reverse Delay
They're often confused because they solve the same emotional problem — building anticipation into a hit — but they're mechanically different effects. Reverse reverb creates one continuous wash of ambience that swells in. Reverse delay creates discrete, rhythmic echoes that stack up toward the hit instead of one smooth wash — more percussive, more "tap tap tap tap-HIT" than a wall of sound. Producers often use both together: a reverse reverb wash under a reverse delay's rhythmic taps.
Real-Time Reverse Reverb: Plugins That Do It Live
The manual method above still works, and some producers prefer it because it lets them use whatever reverb algorithm they already own. But a handful of dedicated plugins now do reverse reverb live, as a standard insert — no bouncing, no re-importing, fully editable while the track plays.
